Skip Bin Sizes Explained: Which Bin Does Your Adelaide Job Need?

Choosing bin size is easy once you stop thinking in cubic metres and start thinking in trailer loads: 1 cubic metre ≈ 1 heaped 6×4 trailer. A 4 m³ skip is four trailer runs you don't have to make.

The three sizes that cover most jobs

4 m³ — the garden tidy-up. Suits a serious weekend clear-out: hedge removal, shed contents, a small bathroom strip-out. Footprint of a small car, fits most driveways. Typical Adelaide price: high $300s.

6 m³ — the renovator's default. The most-hired size for a reason: landscaping strip-outs, paving removal, kitchen renos, moving-house purges. Takes a whole garden's worth of green waste or a room's worth of demolition. Typical Adelaide price: high $400s.

9 m³ — the big clear. Full backyard clear-outs, fence replacement (a 30 m timber fence fills most of one), garage demolitions, deceased-estate clearances. Check driveway space — it's a truck-length bin. Typical Adelaide price: mid $600s.

Weight matters more than volume for heavy waste

Bins carry weight limits, and dense material hits them fast: a 6 m³ bin rim-full of clean concrete would weigh well over its limit. For soil, rubble, brick and concrete, either order a dedicated "heavy" bin arrangement, fill a general bin only part-way with the dense stuff, or — often cheaper — use per-trailer-load removal where the loading is done for you.

What can't go in (any bin, anywhere)

Asbestos or suspected fibro, liquids, paint, chemicals, fuel, batteries, tyres and gas bottles are excluded industry-wide; mattresses and e-waste only by arrangement with a surcharge. A bin found contaminated with prohibited waste attracts sorting and disposal fees that dwarf the hire cost — when in doubt, ask first. Loading like a professional

Flat items first against the floor, heavy items low and even, bulky-but-light material on top, and nothing above the rim — overloaded bins legally can't be transported and you'll be asked to unload the excess. Break down anything that traps air: dismantled trampolines take a quarter of the space of whole ones.
