How each handles reactive clay

Concrete is a rigid slab. When clay swells and shrinks seasonally, the slab bridges the movement — up to a point. Good design manages the inevitable: mesh positioned correctly, saw-cut control joints telling the slab where to crack, and a uniformly compacted base so movement is even. Done right, cracking stays hairline and hidden in joints. Done wrong, you get the random diagonal crack across the middle that never stops annoying you.

Pavers are a flexible surface: hundreds of small units on a screeded bed over compacted road base. Clay movement shows up as slight undulation rather than cracks — and here's the key advantage — pavers can be lifted and relaid. A dip at the wheel track is an afternoon's repair, invisible afterwards. A cracked slab is a cut-out and re-pour that never quite matches.

• Time to use: pavers same day; concrete needs about 7 days before vehicles.
• Maintenance: pavers may need occasional joint sand and weed control; concrete wants resealing every few years (especially exposed aggregate).
• Looks: exposed aggregate reads contemporary; pavers give you pattern, borders and colour blends that suit character homes — a real factor in villa suburbs like Unley and Prospect.
• Steep drives: concrete's continuous surface with a broom finish usually wins for grip and washout resistance.
