Paving on Adelaide's Reactive Clay: Why Base Depth Decides Everything

Ask any Adelaide paver where the dips at the wheel tracks come from and you'll get the same answer: not the pavers. The surface you see is only ever as good as the layers you don't — and on our clays, those layers are a genuine engineering exercise.

What "reactive" actually means

Much of metropolitan Adelaide sits on clays classified H1, H2 or even E (highly to extremely reactive) under AS 2870 — soils whose volume changes significantly with moisture. The seasonal cycle is dramatic: surface movements of 40–70 mm between a wet winter and a February heatwave are normal on highly reactive profiles. Your paving doesn't sit on stable ground; it floats on ground that breathes annually.

Why cheap paving fails in two summers

The typical failure sequence: pavers laid on 50 mm of sand over barely compacted clay → first winter, clay swells unevenly (wetter at garden edges, drier under cover) → first summer, it shrinks and the sand migrates into the opening cracks → year two, the surface telegraphs every moisture zone as a hump or a dip, worst where car wheels concentrate load.

None of this is the pavers' fault. It's the absence of a structural layer between clay and surface.

The base that works

For pedestrian areas on Adelaide clay: excavate 150–180 mm, geofabric on soft or wet profiles, 100 mm of compacted quarry road base (in one lift), 30 mm screeded bedding sand, pavers, edge restraint, jointing sand.

For driveways: excavate 250 mm+, geofabric standard, 150–200 mm road base compacted in two lifts with a plate or roller, then bedding and pavers. The doubled base is what spreads a wheel load until the clay never feels it.

Two details that separate professionals: moisture-condition the base (compacting bone-dry rubble achieves nothing) and concrete edge restraint — an unrestrained field spreads sideways a millimetre a year until joints open and the pattern unlocks.

Geofabric: the $6/m² that saves the job

On wet or highly reactive profiles, a separation geotextile stops the expensive compacted base from being slowly pumped down into the clay (and clay fines pumping up). It's the cheapest insurance in the whole build-up, and it's routinely skipped by anyone quoting on price alone.

The question to ask every quoter
